(US/France/Italy/Germany) TV mini-series shot in two version: an 8 hour French version and a 4 hour English version. Directed by Josée Dayan (Count of Monte Cristo, Balzac). Cast: Gérard Depardieu as Jean Valjean, John Malkovich as Javert, Virginie Ledoyen as Cosette, Christian Clavier as Thénardier, Charlotte Gainsbourg as Fantine
Plot: Jean Valjean is sent to prison for stealing bread. The prison warden, Javert, is a hard man who believes all criminals are irredeemable warts on the face of society, and that it's his job to keep them locked up. Valjean is released but finds that few people are willing to give an ex-con a chance. He changes his name and manages to establish a respectable life for himself. Years later, Javert happens to move to the same town as Valjean. At first Javert doesn't recognize Valjean but once he does, he's determined to put Valjean back behind bars. Valjean ends up breaking the law in order to rescue the little girl of a dying employee, Fantine. Valjean becomes a father to the child, Cosette, and raises her while on the run from Javert. Will society ever allow Cosette and Valjean the peace and happiness they deserve?
