Plot: Not in favor of the marriage of the next emperor, Titus (Depardieu), and Berenice (Bouquet), Queen of Palestine, Antiochus decides to leave the city. Antiochus (Weber) has been secretly in love with Berenice for five years. When he finally reveals his feelings, Berenice agrees that he should leave, but doesn't know that her marriage to Titus has already been compromised. Titus has decided he must give up Berenice, despite his love for her, because the Roman people would never accept a an Emperor with a foreign bride.
