(France/US/Germany) TV mini-series. Directed by Josée Dayan (Balzac, Les Misérables) Cast: Gérard Depardieu (in the title role), Ornella Muti, Christopher Thompson, Sergio Rubini, Stanislas Merhar, Florence Darel, Julie and Guillaume Depardieu
Plot: Edmond Dantès is an upright young ship's officer engaged to his love, Mercedes. His life is shattered when he's framed for treason. Responsible are his two best friends, Mondego and Danglars, who betrayed him and the prosecutor, Villefort, who framed Dantes to spare the real traitor -- Villefort's own father.
Eighteen years later, Dantes escapes prison to seek his revenge. Disguised as the Count of Monte Cristo, he goes to Paris to fascinate -- and destroy -- his enemies. With his faithful manservant (Sergio Rubini), he plots and plays against these aristocrats using alchemy, physical disguises and all manner of Sherlock-Holmes-meets-Aleister-Crowley tricks. A terrifically mysterious gothic pot-boiler.
