Unhook the Stars  (1995)
Last update 3/10/01

(US)  Directed by Nick Cassavetes (actor in The Astronaut's Wife and Face/Off, son of director Jack Cassavetes and actress Gina Rowlands)

Cast:
Gina Rowlands, Marisa Tomei, Jake Lloyd, Gérard Depardieu

Plot:
Mildred's children are grown and finally living on their own. Now the only people who need her are the neighbors, Monica (Marisa Tomei) and her six-year-old son J.J. (Jake Lloyd). Caring for J.J. while his mother works a split shift, Mildred develops a special bond with the child, filling the vacancies in both their lives. But once J.J.'s family gets back on track, she realizes that she has given him all she can and decides to start giving to herself. Directing her own life for the first time, she leads herself to a place she has never before imagined.

Depardieu plays a French Canadian truck driver whose appearance offers Mildred an unexpected opportunity for a late-life romance.

Critical Consensus:  Excellent performances, a strong script and good direction make this a winner and a particular triumph for Rowlands and Tomei.

Awards:  The Screen Actor's Guild nominated Gena Rowlands and Marisa Tomei as Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for their excellent work in this film.

Production:   Depardieu agreed to appear in this film without even reading the script thanks to a personal connection he has with the Cassavetes family (see Filimscout interview -- link provided below).

"The phenomenal Gerard Depardieu, who makes movies with the ease and regularity with which other guys mow the lawn, pops up as Big Tommy the Montreal trucker, an unlikely but charming mature love interest for Mildred."
