(France) Directed by Guiseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso) Cast: Gérard Depardieu, Roman Polanski, Sergio Rubini
Plot: The story begins with a gunshot and a man running through the woods at night in the pouring rain. The man is picked up by police and taken to a police station. There, he is interrogated by "the Inspector". The man claims to be Onoff, a famous writer and the Inspector's favorite author. The Inspector is anxious to be of service, but unfortunately, Onoff cannot remember the full details of what he did that evening, and every time he recounts his actions of the day, he tells a different story. Meanwhile the police station continues to be inundated by leaks and flooding, power-outages and mysteriously arriving corpses. The interrogation is a spiral, winding the Inspector and Onoff towards the ultimate truth like water going down a drain. A superb psychological thriller with career-best performances by all involved.
