(Le hussard sur le toit) (France) Directed by Jean-Paul Rappeneau (Cyrano de Bergerac) and based on the classic French novel by Jean Giono.
Cast: Juliette Binoche and Olivier Martinez. Gérard Depardieu has a cameo role.
Plot: (from the official site) The time is 1832 and a cholera epidemic is sweeping the Province. Angelo, a handsome, angel-faced officer, gallops untiringly through the dying towns and villages. He takes the time to help until his own strength gives out. Inscrutable and calm, he also takes the time to silently love Pauline de Theus, an enigmatic young lady who joins him in his trek as she searches for her missing husband. Together they face an unrelenting epidemic that, like a war, reveals both the misery and the greatness of mankind: fear, panic, denunciation, treason, hatred, anger and looting, and also devotion, courage and self-sacrifice.
Production:
This is a costume romance for Binoche very much along the lines of Chocolat and The Widow of St. Pierre. Depardieu has a cameo as a police superintendent, no doubt undertaken for director Rappeneau's sake. Rappeneau helmed Depardieu in Cyrano.
