(Helas Pour Moi) (France/Switzerland) Directed by Jean-Luc Godard (Breathless, Weekend) Cast: Gérard Depardieu, Laurence Masliah
Plot: A book publisher goes to a small French village to investigate a strange incident. Is it possible that a woman there, Rachel, was really seduced by God, the deity having taken the form of her husband, Simon? This is a very avant-garde film with scene cards, multiple dialogues going on at once, and a disjointed narrative. Depardieu plays Simon and, after the 'possession', God. Turns out the deity just wants to experience human love. In his native form God travels with a companion, Max, and wears a long trench coat, hat and carries a newspaper. In Simon's body, Depardieu sports a strange voice and stilted movements. An interesting concept, but this film is not for those who have little patience with over artsy, difficult-to-follow French films.
Critical Consensus: The critics seem to adore Jean-Luc Godard in general and this film is no exception.
