(Une femme ou deux) (France) Directed by Daniel Vigne (The Return of Martin Guerre)
Cast: Gérard Depardieu, Sigourney Weaver, Dr. Ruth Westheimer
Plot: Julian Chayssac (Depardieu) is a promising young anthropologist, about to shock the world with his reconstruction of the first French 'woman', an ape-like female who was black. Before he can make this career-launching revelation, however, he is to pick up an important grant funder, Mrs. Hefner (Westheimer), at the airport. Things start to go wrong for Julian when an American ad executive named Jessica Fitzgerald (Weaver) pretends to be Hefner in order to escape an obsessive lover who's pursuing her. Things take the usual comedic mistaken-identity route. Julian escorts Jessica around his digging site, all the while assuming she's Mrs. Hefner. Jessica, for her part, continues the ruse when she sees Julian's model of the "first woman" (dubbed "Laura"), whom she decides would be perfect for a perfume campaign. Julian is oh-so sincere and naïve and Jessica, a big-city dame, could easily have him for breakfast. But perhaps she might just come to actually like this befuddled young scientist.
Trivia: Supposedly an update of "Bringing up Baby". Also Dr. Ruth's film debut (how 80's is that?). Weaver speaks quite good French.
