(Les Lune Dans le Caniveau) (France) Directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix (who directed the hit Diva)
Cast: Gérard Depardieu, Nastassja Kinski
Plot: The plot is pretty muddled but here's the gist: Gerard (Depardieu), a stevedore, lost his beautiful younger sister years ago. She killed herself after being raped in a dark alley. Ever since Gerard has been trying to figure out which of their seedy friends and neighbors raped her, often intimidating or threatening to try to get the a confession out of them. This is definitely the ghetto side of town with plenty of likely suspects malingering around. Into this nasty place comes Loretta (Kinski) and her brother, rich kids looking for some laughs, action and drugs. Lovely Loretta takes one look at hunky, brooding Gerard and is smitten. Despite his gut instinct that she's too good for him and it would never work out, he falls for her. His spurned, low-life-like-him lover, Bella, vies for revenge and sets thugs upon him. And, finally, there might be a lead about his sister's rapist. But the film becomes dreamlike and it isn't quite clear if he actually marries Loretta or only imagines it or if his revenge is really satisfied or if the wrong man takes the blame for his sister's tragic end.
Awards: - 1984 César for Best Production Design - Nominated for 1983 Golden Palm at Cannes
Trivia: Depardieu was very frustrated working with the director on this film and reported hated the final product. He called it "The film in the sewer". However, for lovers of the buff young hunk version of Depardieu, you can't beat the visuals in this film. He has a true Marlon Brando/James Dean quality here.
US/UK Status: Was available on VHS in the US (with English subtitles) but is out of print. Used copies frequently crop up on ebay. Not available in the UK.
