(France) Directed by Alain Corneau (All the Mornings of the World). Based on the novel by Louis Gardel.
Cast: Gérard Depardieu, Sophie Marceau, Catherine Deneuve and Philippe Noiret
Plot: The novel by Louis Gardel is a fictionalized account of his grandfather's life. Charles Saganne (Depardieu) is born a peasant with ambitions. He joins the French military and is shipped off to the 'wastelands' of the Sahara. Here he manages to make a name for himself, becoming a legend due to several thrilling exploits which are well-portrayed in the film, including fighting off a rebel army with 48 men. An aristocratic French girl, Madeline (Marceau), falls in love with him at first sight, but her plans are curtailed by her class-conscious parents. Saganne also has an affair with a journalist in Paris (Deneuve). Eventually he becomes such a hero that Madeline's parents cannot prevent their marriage. He survives the Sahara only to sent into war with the Germans, where he's not so lucky.
